About The Photographer
About Heather Bell
I have always been interested in photography. I see the world through a lens. I had never thought that I could pursue photography as a career until a couple years ago. I had always had thought it could never be anything more than a hobby.
I saved up for a long time for my camera. I was working one day a week for six dollars and hour and working my bum off. I saved every penny I had until I had enough to buy my camera. When I had enough, I was so excited that I skipped class to go buy my camera.
I had never had an idea of what I wanted to focus on shooting, I just knew that I wanted to shoot. I began by taking pictures of everything and everyone! The first person I took portrait pictures of was my friend Kevin.
He was very understanding as I took ages getting set up with lighting and camera settings and trying to focus and get just the right angle. He helped me realize my potential and was encouraging the entire way through.
I had been asked to do some action photography for a friend of the family’s son’s football game. I had never thought about doing anything like this before. Hesitantly, I said yes. I was terribly nervous but it turned out to be really fun and I enjoyed it.
I took a few film photography classes in my first year of university and found out that I really enjoy being in the darkroom. I also love the idea that you have limited frames on a roll of film. It really makes you think about every shot you take and make sure it looks good before you take the photo. I love being hands on and developing my own film and making prints in the darkroom. I find it relaxing and incredibly fulfilling to be the only one that touches those photos from the beginning of the process to the end result.
I am inspired by dark things. I like to find the beauty in things that others would generally simply walk past of ignore. I want to strike emotion. I want people to look at a photograph and feel emotions they try to push away. I want to expose those emotions; that vulnerability that people feel.
I was recently asked my a friend of mine if I would take her engagement photos. I was once again very nervous as I had never done an actual photo shoot with a specific intent before. Usually, it was practice, experimentation or just me asking a friend or family member if they would model for me. I was thrilled that someone would think of me to ask! I gladly said yes. The day came around and I was incredibly excited and also very nervous. The couple was very understanding and we had a really great time.
I realized that I love photographing people. I love that you can capture the emotion in their eyes, the smile on their face and everything in between. Since this, I’ve been asked by another friend of mine if I would take her engagement photos as well.
I am still just starting out and finding what I really want to do and I am incredibly excited for everything to come! Thank you to everyone who has supported and believed in me. I can’t wait for what is next on my journey.
Also, a big thank you to Justine Russo for inspiring me.
